Feel No Pain: Get Uncork’d in Las Vegas

For the next four days you can attend the largest foodie event ever held in Las Vegas, if not the Western world: Vegas Uncorked, sponsored by Bon Appetit.

The event officially kicks off at 4 p.m. today when French superchef Alain Ducasse performs the champagne uncorking with a saber at his Mix restaurant and lounge atop The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.

The festival takes place May 6-9, with the signature event being a “Grand Tasting” ($175) on May 7 at the Garden of the Gods in Caesars Palace.  That event will feature chef Hubert Keller serving.

Not everyone has the chance—or wherewithal—to dine at the restaurants of chefs such as Joël Robuchon, Guy Savoy, Bobby Flay or François Payard, but they all will be there (along with about 60 other celebrated chefs) displaying and offering up their delicious wares.

Among the events on May 8 are the Ultimate All-Star Interactive Luncheon ($195) at Encore; Culinary Theater: All the Kitchen’s a Stage ($95) at RM Seafood; and the Wine Immersion Experience ($75) at Bellagio.

The lineup of celebrated chefs who have Las Vegas restaurants includes Bobby Flay, Wolfgang Puck, Paul Bartolotta, Julian Serrano, Todd English, Luciano Pellegrini and Charlie Palmer.

Tickets are going fast; please go to www.vegasuncorked.com for further information.

Las Vegans Toss Energy Drinks for Blissful Sipping

Do you find it hard to be clearly focused when hyped up on energy and caffeine drinks, all the while our zany world is spinning at Mach 1?  The uncontrollable jitters make it hard to accurately text on your cell phone while clubbing.   And, if nothing else, it’s just plain hard on your ol’ ticker.

Rejoice!  Ex Drinks has come to the rescue.  Headquartered in Henderson, Nevada, the company now has a relaxing natural fruit drink called Chill.

“The relaxer drink category is the latest and newest growing category,” says Deborah Behr, managing director of Ex Drinks. “We do have America’s first relaxer beverage. We were the first ones to bring it in the United States. The concept in it is exactly that: to have something to kick back and unwind; put your feet up.”

Containing chamomile, valerian, lemon balm and vitamins, Chill comes without the artificial flavors, colors and other additives often found in energy drinks.

You can pick up a can of the refreshing liquid relaxation at Albertson’s in the Las Vegas Valley or visit their Web site at www.exdrinks.com for more information.

St. Patrick’s Day Overflows in Las Vegas

Las Vegas celebrates most holidays with room rate specials and bonus points on players cards.  But St. Patrick’s goes beyond neon, music and fabulous food.

Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo at Planet Hollywood will be serving up Chocolate Irish Mochas and “Greena colada’s” along with $5 pints of green draft or Guinness.  Wear a kilt and find out what other specials there are beside green tortillas burritos and quesadillas.

Another Planet Hollywood locale, Blondies Sports Bar and Grill, is offering a one of a kind event – the Glow Green party.  Wear white – and be sure it’s something you don’t mind getting marked.  You’ll have to fork over $20 for cover, but you’ll enjoy all you can drink draft.  Once you’ve tossed back a few, you can put your drunk drawing skills to work when the black lights go on and the highlighters come out.

If it’s a true Irish moment you’re really wanting to have, stop by Fado’s Irish Pub on Eastern starting at 8 a.m. with Kegs and Eggs followed by music by Finnegan’s Wake at noon.  The party goes on with more musical groups and, of course, a wonderful selection of Guinness, Harp and fine Irish whiskey.

But for some of us, one day to celebrate St. Patty’s just isn’t enough.  Not nearly.  So why not join the four-day block party at O’Sheas on the Strip?  There promises to be beer pong with Peepshow starlet Holly Madison, music by DJ Irish and later by the Sin City Sinners and $1 Irish Car Bombs and $4 Guinness on tap.    The party goes on until midnight March 20 with Blarney rock-bottom drink specials and events every day.

New Fusion Bar at The Palazzo in Las Vegas Offers Guests Out of this World Latin-Inspired Cocktails

There is a whole new vibrant energy on the casino floor at The Palazzo in Las Vegas.  Their new Fusion bar has recently opened and it features a Latin-inspired mixology bar with beautifully handcrafted cocktails focusing on the Latin American beverage culture.

Designed by hand-picked, award-winning bartenders and mixologists, Fusion’s cocktail menu focuses on Brazilian, Peruvian, and Mexican regions of the world. Flavorful music and video from Latin America play throughout the day and night as guests enjoy delicious fusions custom made by a skillfully trained mixology team.

The mixology team at Fusion creates their select cocktails through muddling– a technique that uses the concept of mixing fresh fruit with a stainless steel rod, by hand, to create a refreshing, all-natural concoction. Examples include the Peruvian-fused Pisco Tango, with mango infused Barsol Pisco Quebranta, fresh lime juice, rock candy syrup, and funkin mango puree; Brazilian-infused Pineapple Batida with Agua Luca Cachaca, fresh pineapple juice, and sweetened condensed milk; or the Mexican-fused Paloma with pink grapefruit, tequila, rock candy syrup, fresh pink grapefruit juice and 7 Up.

“Fusion brings the regional beverage culture of Latin America to The Palazzo,” said Sebastien Silvestri, executive director of food and beverage for The Palazzo and The Venetian. “With fine spirits such as rum, pisco, cachaca, and tequila coupled with fresh fruit, the cocktail experience at Fusion will allow guests to enjoy a premium beverage in a high energy environment.”

Along with offering the finest cocktails, gaming machines consisting of blackjack, keno, poker, and slots are conveniently located at the bar. Happy Hour Specials occur daily from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. – Midnight. Fusion is located on The Palazzo casino floor and is open 24 hours a day. Betcha Can’t Down this Las Vegas Rippa of a Burger!

Designed like an artsy roadhouse (or are all longhorn skulls just blown glass?), this eco-friendly Las Vegas burger joint serves juicy piles of dry-aged, hormone-free Hereford beef with never-frozen accoutrements: homemade pickles delivered daily, from-scratch ketchup, and farmstead cheeses (American, Cabot cheddar, Brie, goat, and you-name-it). burger

Their saloon-style bar innovatively serves up Vitamin Water cocktails or, if all that heath-food c__p is not for you, take a guzzle of their booze-loaded milkshakes with straws made from a biodegradable corn-based polymer — along with the shake, the straw will go straight to your hips.  And the good thing about it all- their food has no MSG- and they have wheelchair access. Imagine that.

But the good gets even better.  They have recently issued a gastronomic challenge of unmatched giganto proportions: Finish their four-pound Extreme Burger with fixings and the pound of fries that come with it in an hour and the burger will be renamed for you.   Think of it like streets being named for the deceased…

Recently, competitive eater Ron Koch of Las Vegas reportedly finished the meal – lounging with a respirator now – in 27 minutes, having it promptly and aptly named the “Undertaker.”   It included six patties, weighing a half-pound each, cheese, bacon, Portobello mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, burger sauce, spicy mustard, herb mayo and ghost peppers (aka naga jolokia peppers, confirmed by Guinness World Records to be the hottest chili in the world) and served on a sweet egg bun no less.

But all records are meant to be broken, right?   Their new challenge features 11 patties (if the math is right, that’s a little shy of eight pounds) and consume not one, but three pounds of greasy fries of the good cholesterol kind.  Down about 11 pounds of food in an hour and the burger will be renamed for you – – or perhaps you could negotiate your choice of headstone at the grave site of your choosing?

The good news is that even if you don’t finish in an hour or all of it, the bill still will total $30.

Now, really, is this an epic feast your arteries can be denied?

To test your eating prowess, just head down to LBS Burger restaurant located inside the Red Rock Resort, 11011 W. Charleston Blvd., in Las Vegas. Call if you dare- 702-835-9393.
