Las Vegas Pool Groupies Wanted for YouTube Stardom & Bucks

While Las Vegans and tourists alike are warmly welcomed to celebrate (and brave!) the return of the scorching sun’s rays and sweltering heat, some enterprising people are also taking the opportunity to cash in on the many pool festivities occuring at the thirteen or so casino and resort pools in Las Vegas.

A new web series on YouTube, “Vegas Summer Crew,”  is inviting everyone to the pool parties.  Poolside festivities will be delivered nationwide online, encouraging everyone not to miss out on one drop of sweat next season.

The series also is opening doors for some lucky buxom and buff  pool denizens, offering them the chance to become one of the faces of the “Vegas Summer Crew.” The chosen few will act as the series’ hosts, showing up to a total of nine events, consisting of major casinos’ poolside concerts and parties, as well as some red carpet events. Hosts will be interviewing attendees and checking in on the party, all while being filmed and fed back to the web.

Auditions will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 13 at Cashman Theater (850 Las Vegas Blvd North). The show is seeking people 21 and up who consider themselves fun, outgoing and energetic. It also helps, of course, if you look great scantily clad — hopefuls are asked to show-up in their best bikini or board shorts.

“What we’re looking for is people with fun, outgoing personalities that feel comfortable going out into a crowd and getting interaction. No on-camera experience [is necessary]; they just have to be fun,” says Tony Marin, a rep for the “Vegas Summer Crew.”

There also will be an ongoing contest throughout the pool season allowing people all over the country to submit a video of themselves in a swimsuit explaining why they too would make a great face for the “Vegas Summer Crew.”  Eight contestants will be chosen, winning themselves a trip to Las Vegas and a potential guest host spot.

There’s an added bonus to getting your face out on the World Wide Web: “There will be compensation for whoever we hire,” says Marin.

Sounds like this summer job sure beats selling lemonade on the corner.

Alicia Keys Rescues Unemployed

Alicia Keys is tackling the unemployment epidemic, one fan at a time.  On April 6 the neo-soul singer-songwriter-philanthropist proudly announced she is partnering with the jobs Web site www.Monster.com to launch her Web site IAAS.com (I Am a Super Woman) and have it fully operational with all the bells and whistles in July.

Keys is specifically looking for a full-time “head blogger,” and she’s taking applications through May 1.

So, if you’re in Las Vegas this Saturday, April 9, don’t forget to stop by Keys’ Freedom Tour at Mandalay Bay Event Center, with plenty of resumes in hand– she just may snatch yours blowing in the stiff unemployment wind as she’s singing her message-laden songs.

Failing this, you need to wait until Keyes is in Portugal to start the European leg of her tour.

Donald Trump is Hiring in Las Vegas Today

Good news, Los Wages, Donald Trump is hiring today!  (And, no, it’s not an April Fools’ joke, although you may later be labeled a butt- or worse!)

You may be hired, and then in a blink of the eye, you may be fired equally swiftly on national television.  But so what?  A job is a job, even if it’s temporary, right?

The Donald’s staff is having an open casting call today in Las Vegas, auditioning potential contestants for the next season of The Apprentice

Producers are particularly seeking candidates who have been affected by the recession, like business professionals recently laid off, college grads who cannot find a job or people working a job they are overqualified for because it is the only option for survival.

If this sounds like it has you written all over it and you think you can handle The Donald’s demands (or if you do not have anything better to do because, well, you’re unemployed), head over to the Trump International Hotel today, where wristbands will be distributed at 8 a.m. and interviews begin at 9 a.m.

If you cannot make it down to Trump’s tower Thursday, you can apply by e-mailing ginacasting@yahoo.com .  Please include a recent photo, an updated resume and a personal and professional biography detailing how the recession has affected your life.

Got a Body to Die For? Get Hired in Las Vegas for Pool Parties!

Maybe you’ve noticed the recent flurry of full-page ads for Las Vegas jobs that started popping up in publications over the past few weeks. This is unusual: Most employers, even in Las Vegas, don’t take out full-page glossy ads to fill vacancies- particularly in this choking economy.  But this is a particular and peculiar niche of employment opportunity: The big casinos are hiring for their pools and “daylife” parties, cocktail servers, bartenders, porters, bussers, bar backs, security officers, runners, VIP hosts and amenities girls. Oh, and lifeguards, too.

The new Wynn’s Encore Beach Club and Surrender nightclub alone will fill 400 positions. More than 1,500 applied for the 160 positions at the Hard Rock’s two pools. With the Las Vegas unemployment rate at 13.1 percent, this is just a drop in the ocean, of course. But it’s something. And when the four-month Spring Break known as pool season begins March 12 at MGM Grand’s Wet Republic 53,000-square-foot “ultrapool,” it will bring a much-needed splash of cash into the local economy. Pool parties = liquidity.

Several new cement ponds have been added to our pool of pools: In addition to the $100 million Encore aquatic complex, this season sees the debut of the Liquid pool party at Aria and the Lavo party at Palazzo. These join the other luxe swimmin’ holes, including the venerable Rehab party at the Hard Rock, Relapse at the Flamingo, Tao Beach at the Venetian, Voodoo Beach at Rio, Venus Pool Club at Caesars Palace, Bare at Mirage, Day Dream at M, and Ditch Fridays at the Palms.

The hiring process for these parties is called “casting,” and applicants are instructed to “bring your swimsuit for your audition photo.” In other words, these jobs aren’t available to every body—the beauty bar is set pretty high. But those of us who wouldn’t dare to bare it at these parties—even as a guest—can take cold comfort in the fact that pool-season employment will keep a few thousand dangerously pretty people off the streets.

Political Bigwigs in Las Vegas Tomorrow for National Clean Energy Summit

Lots of high-energy political figures will be in Las Vegas on Aug. 10 at the National Clean Energy Summit 2.0, flapping their jaws in discussions on how to build a clean energy economy.

In addition to former President Bill Clinton (also rumored to be having a stag birthday in Las Vegas tomorrow- not on the taxpayers’ dime), former Vice President Al Gore and California ‘Terminator’ Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the event will also be a cornucopia of public officials, including Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the forum will focus on creating jobs through investments in green power.

Recent surveys, however, show Americans are turning a cold, if not freezing shoulder to global warming, and are especially irate when it comes to considering or enacting legislation that might result in higher power bills or contribute to the continuing erosion of jobs.

The event begins at 10 a.m. inside the Cox Pavilion on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Tickets for the event cost $150.  For more information, visit www.CleanEnergySummit.org.

JubileeAs one of the longest-running shows on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, the retro -glam showgirl extravaganza Jubilee! at Bally’s Las Vegas has entertained more than 11 million guests. On July 31 the show celebrates 28 years of gorgeous showgirls, lavish costumes, dazzling scenery, world -renowned specialty acts, dynamic music and graceful pageantry.

Conceived, staged and directed by the legendary Donn Arden, who brought the spectacular French-style revue “Lido de Paris” to Las Vegas, Jubilee! is an elaborate stage production.

Critics from the Travel Channel/BBC, New York Times and Las Vegas Review Journal have hailed Jubilee! as the best showgirl show noting that “in an era of high -tech productions the timeless musical of Jubilee! is the last of its kind.” Iconic showgirls from Jubilee! have been seen on “The View,” NBC’s ‘The Today Show,” “Last Comic Standing,” “The Tyra Banks Show” and “The Montel Williams Show.”

To commemorate the anniversary Bally’s Las Vegas is offering a special hotel package. The glamorous getaway includes a minimum two-night hotel stay in a Bally’s deluxe room appointed in an art deco style, two tickets to Jubilee!, 2-for-1 Bally’s Spa entrance and $50 dining credit. Reservations can be made online at http://www.BallysLasVegas.com.

Jubilee! is performed twice nightly, six days a week at 7:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., dark on Fridays. As the only showgirl show standing, Jubilee! embodies the very essence of sexy, classic Las Vegas. Earlier this month the show kicked off a new creative campaign. Tag lines reading “The headdress weighs 35 lbs. but the rest of the costume could fit in a teacup,” and “The grandest entrance in Vegas isn’t at the front of a hotel” remind audiences about the glamour and spectacle of 85 women wearing little more than feathers and rhinestones.

2,000 Jobseekers Show up at Las Vegas Job Fair – for Housekeepers!

In a sign reflecting our continuing hard economic times, more than 2,000 people came looking for work on Monday at a job fair for housekeepers at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas- twice as many as as the hotel-casino expected to show up for the 200 openings.

Executives, master’s degree applicants, and other high powered candidates had no qualms in looking their best, trying out for the elusive offers.

And if that’s not enough job applicant competition, yesterday the job fair continued.

The housekeepers are planned to start work in two weeks.

The Hard Rock in Las Vegas, which is currently undergoing a $750 million expansion that is scheduled to be completed in November, is also planning on future job fairs to fill another 600 positions, including front-desk clerks, bartenders and casino dealers.  That is if the current job fairs don’t yield enough qualified candidates.

The Hard Rock’s job fair is one of the few good signs in the current Las Vegas job market, with Nevada reporting 11.3 percent unemployment in May, one of the leading unemployment states in the nation.

The Hard Rock has a great reputation as a Las Vegas employer, reportedly not laying off a single employee last year.

In addition, construction progress on the expansion is ahead of schedule, with the 490-room hotel tower planned to open the third week of July, a couple of months early.

The second 375-room hotel tower, three new restaurants, a spa, and new casino space and amenities is planned to open by the end of November.

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino is Expanding, Hiring in Las Vegas

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas is hiring a total of 1,200 employees before the end of this year to fill a variety of positions due to the property’s current expansion.

Hard Rock recently hired 400 employees and plans to hire approximately 800 more before the end of 2009. Positions in all areas still to be filled include on call dealers, housekeeping staff, bellmen, front desk agents, room reservation agents and EVS attendants. A series of job fairs will be held on property throughout the summer. Specific dates and times will be announced soon.

Hard Rock is hiring due to the current $750 million expansion. When completed, the property will be more than triple its original size.

Most recently, Hard Rock celebrated the opening of its new $60 million concert venue, The Joint, Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co., 51,000 additional square feet of meeting and convention space and the sleek, contemporary steakhouse, rare 120º.

Still to come is an all-suite 15-story south tower, a new 17-story north tower, approximately 30,000 square feet of additional casino space, a new nightclub, multiple new retail outlets and a new spa and health club. Hard Rock’s award-winning pool is also being expanded. The project, which began in 2007, is expected to be fully complete in early 2010.

Reality is . . . World’s Strictest Parents?

“Reality” programming.  Design a fish-out-of-water scenario.  Find folks willing to have every moment of their life’s reality-tvexperiences video taped and displayed for what is sure to result in some public ridicule.  Then turn on the cameras and get ready to roll – somewhere there will be a market share willing to watch.  Considering the lower costs to produce shows like Survivor and the Amazing Race and the high advertising revenues those programs can generate, and it’s no wonder that more and more production companies are trying their hand at the “reality” television market.

Not long after the reality travel shows started to hit the air, a second trend of hometown reality programming began appearing with shows like Super Nanny and It’s Me or The Dog popping up.  In these situation dromedies, dysfunctional family life was placed front and center with outtakes, personal video diaries and complete blog-o-sphere communities dedicated to dissecting each and every episode.

Enter the latest in the reality genre – The World’s Strictest Parents.  For parents who are “proud of your firm parenting skills” this is a chance to host a teen who is “tired of your parents’ rules.” This import from British television is meant to shine a light on family relations and if it follows the path of the British original, that path will be short and rather one direction.  Unlike other trade-em-up programming such as Wife Swap where the mis-matched mom and family’s both trade out for two weeks or more, The World’s Strictest Parents is a one way flip that lasts on average only 8 days.  Unruly teens who are frustrated by the structure and stricture of their home life are sent to live with parents who are all about structure and stricture.

If you’re interested in trying out, fill out the online form and head for casting in Las Vegas.  At least 8 episodes of the U.S. version are planned and have been picked up by CMT for an April pairing with Nanny 911.
