‘Subway Man’ Speaks in Las Vegas on Sept. 30

Jared Fogle, the man who more than 10 years ago lost over 245 pounds by eating two SUBWAY sandwiches a day, will be at the White Middle School in Las Vegas this Wednesday, September 30, 2009 from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. to speak to students, teachers and faculty about the need to eat healthy and stay fit.  JaredFogle

White Middle School hosts 1,300 children in grades 6, 7 and 8 and is an active participant in the Vegas PBS Keeping Kids Fit program. Jared’s story resonates with children and provides a real life incentive for kids to stay healthy and fit.

On the heels of a national study on obesity released earlier this summer, Jared has been speaking at venues across the country about the importance of making healthy food choices.  With our country’s health care crisis at an all time high and health care related costs due to obesity in the billions. Jared, who has been a long-time advocate for children, believes that by investing in prevention through education it can make a significant impact.

Vegas PBS Keeping Kids Fit was started two years ago and has been recognized for program excellence both nationally and locally. Keeping Kids Fit incorporates diverse forms of technology along with hands on instruction to promote wellness. The program targets children and families who are statistically at a higher risk for childhood obesity.

Cure for Recession Blues?

Most everyone to some extent has or is being touched by our economic recession blues.  A new prescription for those ills is debuting at 7:30 p.m. on April 6 on KLVX-TV, Channel 10 (Vegas PBS) when they air “Recession Rx,” and also show it on their Web site (www.VegasPBS.org/rx), YouTube and as an Internet stream and podcast.

All of our recession’s biggest aches and pains – the mortgage crisis, home foreclosures, unemployment, bankruptcy, health care, job searches and training, legal problems, even psychological issues – will be diagnosed on “Rx,” a half-hour, 13-week series.

“We’re not solving everybody’s problems, but we’re setting out to say what’s out there,” says Cathy Hanson, host of the television show.

Versatile Las Vegas Entertainer Rita Rudner Extends Reign through 2011

In a city where top female performers sometimes have to resort to stripping down to pasties and a G-string to earn top entertainment dollars, Rita Rudner, though, has managed to remain fully clothed.  And she daily fills Las Vegas showrooms.  After eight years of performing, Rudner has signed on to continue on her reign of entertaining and amusing Las Vegas visitors and residents for three more years with Harrah’s Hotel and Casino. ritarudner1

In August 2001, Miss Rudner began her very successful Las Vegas run at the New York – New York Hotel and Casino.  She immediately was well accepted by audiences and earned accolades for her performances, including the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s “Best Comedian.” She received the Gracie Allen Award in 2004 for her syndicated comedy show “Ask Rita” which used the talk show format to showcase a variety of performers doing improvisational comedy.  Miss Rudner moved to a larger venue in October 2006 when she brought her act to the Harrah’s in Las Vegas.  She continues to be recognized as a local favorite in the annual Las Vegas Review-Journal’s reader poll.

Beyond her comedic stage talents, Rita Rudner has co-written a play with her husband, Martin Bergman, “Room 776” which was performed in Las Vegas local theatre in 2008.  This isn’t the first team writing experience for the couple – they’ve penned a number of screenplays including the movie “Peter’s Friends.”

Miss Rudner is also an author, with several books in print.  The most recent, “I’ve Still Got It: I Just Don’t Know Where I Put It,” is planned to be out in paperback in May 2009.

And somehow between her many performances at Harrah’s, Miss Rudner found the time to tape a TV special for PBS, which is now available on DVD- “Rita Rudner: Live in Las Vegas” that was a huge success for the public television network.
