First U.S. Legal Male Prostitute Hangs Up His Spurs

The first legal male prostitute in the U.S. has left a Nevada brothel.  Why? Fewer than 10 customers after a two-month stint!

Brothel owner Jim Davis  of the Shady Lady Ranch, a brothel 150 miles northwest of Las Vegas, said a new replacement stud has been hired, but the original 25-year-old “prostitude,” who worked simply under the name “Markus,” could be back.

Bobbi Davis, who co-owns the brothel with her husband and runs it as its madam, said the departure of Markus was a mutual decision.

Markus is still listed under the name “Markus Destin” by adult talent agency OC Modeling.

Davis said the brothel would keep employing men to have sex with women, including its latest hire, a Las Vegas man in his mid-30s who works under the name “Y. Not,” who has had about 10 customers since Markus has left.

The focus of the business, however, will remain on women prostitutes serving men, Davis said.

The Shady Lady Ranch created a huge stir in Nevada’s brothel industry when it successfully won state and county approval to hire a male sex worker.

After hiring Markus, the Davises cut him off from speaking with reporters after his first two interviews, in which he compared himself with Rosa Parks and Mahatma Gandhi.

Markus was the subject of a first-person story by the New York Post after a female reporter hired him but she said they did not have sex.

Brothels Get Raw Deal in Nevada

Even sex is struggling in our economy- and especially in fickle Nevada.  A federal appeals court last week upheld a Nevada law that bars legal brothels that operate in some of the state’s rural areas from advertising by newspaper, leaflets and billboards in Las Vegas, Reno and other places where prostitution is illegal.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto hailed the ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel in San Francisco, while a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada promised to appeal.

The laws had been challenged by the ACLU, a Nye County brothel called the Shady Lady Ranch and two newspapers: the High Desert Advocate and Las Vegas City Life.

Prostitution is illegal in Clark and Washoe counties — which include Las Vegas and Reno — and three other Nevada counties. Ten Nevada counties authorize prostitution by local ordinance.

The 9th Circuit panel reversed a ruling by U.S. District Court Judge James Mahan in Nevada that two 1979 state laws prohibiting brothel advertising in counties where prostitution is illegal were overly broad and unconstitutional.

The laws also prohibit brothel advertising in theaters and on streets and public highways.

Nevada still seeks to confine the sale of sex acts through licensing and advertising restrictions, the judges said.

ACLU attorney Allen Lichtenstein said he didn’t immediately know whether he’d seek a hearing before the full 9th Circuit or would ask the U.S. Supreme Court to take the case.

“The key issue is freedom of speech,” he said.

“It’s a violation of the First Amendment for the state to restrict advertising by a legal industry, and it’s wrong for a court to make exceptions because the state doesn’t want to have it advertised that legalized prostitution exists,” Lichtenstein said.

Masto called free speech “perhaps our most cherished right.” But Nevada has had restrictions on brothel advertising for 40 years, and the state should have the right to have reasonable limitations, she said.

The case is Coyote Publishing v. Miller, No. 07-16633.

Learn Erotic Macramé in Las Vegas

Leave your momma at home.  This Las Vegas macramé class on Sunday is definitely not for the faint of heart or those that want to learn  to craft a mere plant holder.

No, in this class participants will learn how to make chest harnesses, rope corsets, crotch ropes and even rump bindings.  We kid you not.

The higher learning class will be led by Lee Harrington, who has been tied to the BDSM community for more than 14 years, and has written books on the role of ropes in bondage play.

Submissive students will learn the erotic knotty art in pairs, and must provide their own rope.

Rest assured, what you learn here won’t come undone- no matter how much or how loud you moan.

The class will be held this Sunday, March 7, 12:30 p.m., at the Erotic Heritage Museum, 3275 Industrial Road, 702-369-6441; $25 ($20 in advance).

Nevada’s First Male Prostitute Waits to Please

The Shady Lady Ranch in Nevada, located 150 miles northwest of Las Vegas, had its first male prostitute working on Wednesday, a 25-year-old from California named “Markus.”  But through Saturday, not any lady was shady enough, apparently, to take him up on his enticing offer.

All 5 feet 9 inches of him, weighing in at 180 pounds, patiently waits- and hopes.

The brothel’s owner, Bobbi Davis, said she has received a couple of nibbles, inquiries that is, from curious women, including one who talked about making an appointment soon.   But Davis is quick to point out that things are usually slow this time of year.

Meanwhile, Markus was mentioned by talk show host Jay Leno Wednesday night, but has granted just two interviews – one with “Details” magazine, the other with ABC’s “Nightline” – but Davis said she asked him not to talk to any more journalists.  Probably that was because in the “Details” article he compares himself to a key figure of the civil rights movement, Rosa Parks.

“This actually isn’t about selling my body. This is about changing social norms,” says Markus.

Could it be that Markus has a “Going Rogue” book deal in the works?

Markus, hailing from the adult film business, where he appeared in a few porn movies, if he does get a client, will get paid the same rates as female brethren:  $300 for one hour, $500 for two.  That price includes “anything within reason,” according to Davis.

“We’re working on our second guy, but we’re kind of slowing it off until we see how good we can do with Marcus,” Bobbi Davis says.

Ex-Madam Heidi Fleiss Back on Top- Again!

Las Vegas Backstage Access has written many times on the illustrious Heidi Fleiss.

Now, the ex-Madam Heidi Fleiss is back in the news again, and pretty much for the same reason she always made news, selling sex.

This time however, her source of income is the airing of an HBO special about, Heidi Fleiss’ Stud Farm, her latest sex for money venture in Las Vegas – where anything is legal- well, er…almost.

Now, fresh off her inpatient drug treatment program stint on VH1’s “Celebrity Rehab 2” with Dr. Drew Pinsky, in September Fleiss was sentenced to three years probation on felony drug charges stemming from her February ’08 arrest in Pahrump, a rural town 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas.

She needs to stay out of trouble, and away from drugs, through 2012.   She promised she would.

The former Hollywood Madam, 43, plans to leave her home in Pahrump and her many birds in January to be on the show, which is in its last season. It was announced in August that Britain’s Channel 4 would pull the plug on the series due to low viewer ratings.

District Judge John Davis in Pahrump cleared her earliery in the week to travel to London early January for a paid appearance on the reality television show.

This will be her second appearance on a reality television show, unless you count all of the times her real life has landed her on televison.

Fleiss told the Review-Journal that she was to be paid $10,000 per episode, money she needs as her most recent endeavor, a dog grooming shop in Las Vegas, is apparently all washed up.

She continues to draw a paycheck from a laundromat she owns in Pahrump called Dirty Laundry.

Fleiss originally achieved notoriety through her part in an illegal prositution ring in Hollywood, claiming she made in excess of $10 millon a year which involved high profile celebrities, drugs, and all the other assorted benefits of life down under.

As for her latest venture, there is not much news as to how many episodes HBO will run, or the business end of the deal either.

‘Peepshow’ in Las Vegas not for Camera Peeking

Scandalous photographs recently snapped at a risqué Las Vegas show have raised questions about technology versus security.

The photos were of performer Aubrey O’Day in topless revue “Peepshow” at Planet Hollywood. AubreyODay

Between cameras and cell phones, pictures can be easily snapped and even full length movies can be recorded — causing rising concerns now to producers and performers.

The pictures taken were not suitable for children and were something the performer did not want to see surfacing on the Internet.

“I decided to call out tonight because of some nude photos that were illegally obtained last night at the show,” O’Day said.

O’Day cancelled an appearance earlier this week after the nude pictures circulated the Web. She later posted a video on YouTube addressing the candid photos.

“It made me feel bad. It made me insecure about my body,” O’Day said.

Security officials said they are not sure how the photos were captured. “We don’t allow any cameras in the theater,” said vice president of BASE Entertainment Marks Chowning.

But even with all the security detail and bag checks, many devices still do sneak inside.

Chowning works for the company that manages “Peepshow” and said it’s a problem that’s getting tougher to handle.  “It’s somewhat of a losing battle. As you know, the devices are getting smaller and better equipped with more technology,” Chowning said.

At almost every Las Vegas show, nude or not, recording is forbidden.  Knowing it’s almost impossible to stop everyone, “Peepshow” uses trained eyes and even night vision goggles to weed out clandestine photographers.

“We will be more aggressive about watching the audience. We will have the night vision goggles in use, and people who are found in violation of the policy will be ejected from the theater,” Chowning said.  “Really trying to protect what the women want protected, which is not having naked pictures of them strewn about the Internet,” Chowning said.

O’Day has since returned to “Peepshow” after sitting out one night. The show opened earlier this year.

It’s Tough, Very Tough Being Heidi Fleiss

The television soap opera Guiding Light recently aired its final episode after running a glorious 72 years.  But, as normally is the case, when one show leaves, something is always right there waiting in the wings to fill the entertainment vacuum.    Sporting a similar theme on a variation, there is the inimitable Heidi Fleiss.  Although she’s not 72 yet – she only looks that old – hardly a day goes by when one drama is replaced with yet another surrounding Fleiss’ colorful and checkered life in and around Sin City-  the city’s monicker and her lifelong passion, no matter how it is packaged.

For today’s update Las Vegas Backstage Access learns that the former “Hollywood Madam” Heidi Fleiss’ Las Vegas dog grooming business has been shut down by a judge as part of a civil lawsuit, just two days after she was sentenced to three years probation on felony drug charges.

Fleiss’ Dirty Dog salon had been open only three days when Clark County District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez ordered it closed last Thursday.

The ruling was in response to a motion filed by Jeffery Marvian, who claims his estranged wife conspired to sell the business to Fleiss in violation of the couple’s ongoing divorce action.

Marvian’s attorney, Shelley Lubritz, apparently has the smoking gun:  She said she recorded a conversation in which her client’s wife, Nickol Marvian, admitted selling the business to Fleiss and porn star Kendra Jade Rossi behind Jeffery Marvian’s back.

Lubritz said the Marvians took out a $60,000 second mortgage on their home to start the shop, so they both have an interest in the business.

Gonzalez ordered Dirty Dog to remain closed until a Sept. 30 hearing that could determine whether Fleiss will be allowed to reopen the salon.

Fleiss on Friday denied any involvement in a conspiracy and said she is confident the business will be allowed to reopen.

“I’ll just have to tell my side to the judge,” she told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I already had a sign made up that says I’ll be open on the first (of October). On the first, I’m offering free self-washes to anyone who comes in.”

Last Tuesday, Fleiss was placed on probation for three years stemming from her arrest in the rural Nevada town of Parhrump where she lives. Fleiss pleaded guilty to unlawful use of methamphetamine and possession of the painkiller hydrocodone without a prescription.

Sextress Heidi Fleiss Trys to Go Clean, Winds Up Dirty- Again!

Even when Heidi Fleiss tries to go clean, the former ‘Hollywood Madam’ winds up getting dirty.

Days after Las Vegas Backstage Access reported on August 31 about her new pet gromming business venture, Fleiss and two business partners were sued by a man who claimed the business was purchased illegally!

The plaintiff, Jeffrey Marvian, originally opened the Little Buddy Bath pet groomer with his wife before the couple’s marriage soured and they planned to divorce. Court papers said the couple borrowed $60,000 against the equity in their home to pay for the business.

But Marvian claimed his wife, Nickol, sold “Little Buddy” to Fleiss and former porn star Kendra Rossi without his consent or knowledge.

To hide the sale, Marvian claimed his wife was paid nothing and instead entered into a deal to be featured in a reality television show that focused on Fleiss’ attempt to run the shop.

A judge has yet to hear Marvian’s complaint.

The lawsuit cited Fliess saying she is the owner of Little Buddy Bath but planned to change the name to “Dirty Dogs.” That name is similar to the “Dirty Laundry” moniker she gave to a laundromat Fleiss opened in Pahrump.

Fleiss insisted the name is just a play on words, and customers shouldn’t expect anything more than a professional service at both businesses.

“As far as the sex business goes, I have no interest in it. I know that business better than anyone. No one can run a sex business like me. I just have zero interest in it,” Fleiss said. “My feet are barely getting wet in this business, and I wish I would have been in this business from the start.”

Former Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss Plots Dirty Dog Deeds with Porn Star Homey in Las Vegas

The former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss enjoys doing most anything dirty in Nevada.  Her dirty empire is now morphing, going to the dogs, with grandiose plans to grow it leaps and bounds.  Heidi Fleiss

dirtylaundryFirst, Fleiss gave a boost to Pahrump, Nevada tax revenues in 2007, and since, by opening her very successful Dirty Laundry coin-op laundromat business.  Now, she’s got a new plan– taking dead aim at cleaning all the dirty dogs in Las Vegas.

Fleiss is the new owner of a small dog grooming business located in a Kmart shopping center at Sunset and Sandhill roads in Las Vegas that offers everything from doggy dye jobs, nail polish pet-icures, to self-service stations where, if so inclined, you can wash your own dirty ol’ pooch.

They’re calling their business Dirty Dog, though the sign above the door still bears the business’ old name, Little Buddy Bath.

Kendra RossiFleiss’ business partner in the venture is Kendra Jade Rossi, left, a porn star and recovering sex addict who said she plans to regularly commute to Las Vegas from her home in Los Angeles.

Their place is open for business, but it’s a bit of a mess right now as Fleiss and company remodel with calming colors and distressed antique furniture meant to give it that “shabby-chic look.”  When they’re done, Fleiss hopes, their doggy salon is going to look like something you would find in a ritzy Los Angeles shopping area.

“But it’s going to feel in your pocket like you just went to Kmart,” Rossi said.

Fleiss got the dirty dog bug and decided to get into the grooming business after she attended PetSmart Inc.’s annual meeting in June and learned how much money people spend on their pets each year– to the tune of $6 billion!

“I wish I’d known about this before. I never would have gone into the sex business or any other business,” Fleiss quipped.

Fleiss went to the PetSmart meeting in New York City to speak on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which has called on the retailer to phase out the sale of live birds.

Fleiss has always had a true, enduring love for all types of flesh, feathered and furred animals.  She developed a passion for parrots almost immediately after she moved to Pahrump in 2005 and inherited a menagerie of 26 of the exotic birds from her elderly neighbor.  She now shares her home with her feathered friends, letting them fly free without confining cages.

Fleiss originally moved to the town 60 miles west of Las Vegas to open a unique brothel for women called the Stud Farm, but she later abandoned that idea amid political pressure and excessive government red tape.  [Feb. 13 Las Vegas Backstage Access article.]

Fleiss and Rossi struck up an amiable friendship recently when they appeared together on the VH1 rehab reality show “Sober House,” where Fleiss went after soon-to-be-televised treatment for drug addiction.

“We formed our own little clique,” said Rossi, who runs an animal rescue in Los Angeles.

Fleiss said they bonded over their love of animals. “The way I am about birds, she is about dogs,” she said.

They are already talking about expanding the shop and adding boarding services and dog nutrition counseling. And that’s just the beginning.

“We don’t want one Dirty Dog, we want 100 Dirty Dogs,” Fleiss said, adding the pet industry looks like a can’t-miss proposition.

“Anything with animals does really well. Come on, people buy their dogs $8,000 Gucci sweaters,” she said. “People get over their mother or brother dying. They never get over their pet dying.”

So why should people trust their beloved pets to a madam and a porn star who just happily met each other in rehab?

“I changed my whole life for animals,” Fleiss said, adding her past is just that- the past.

All Prostitution Doesn’t Involve Sex in Las Vegas

What do exotic and erotic Strip show performers do when not strutting their stuff in Las Vegas?  Strut some more, of course.

The 96-seat Onyx Theatre in Las Vegas, housed in the back of a sex show in the Commercial Center, is a fitting space for a new show called “The Art of Prostitution “ artofprostitution

However, “Prostitution,” created by Wassa Coulibaly, a dancer in Cirque du Soleil’s “Zumanity,” isn’t just about the physical aspects of the oldest profession.

Coulibaly, raised in a Muslim family in Senegal, says not all prostitution involves sex.  She considers “any love relationship that isn’t unconditional love” to be prostitution.

“There’s so many type of prostitutes.  Prostitution doesn’t just happen on the street corner, it happens in many forms.  When something is repressed, sexuality come outs in a distorted way,” says Coulibaly.

The performers for the show come for a variety of other Strip show, with the play beginning after they Monday shows, usually at 1 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Onyx Theatre, inside The Rack, at 953 E. Sahara Ave., Unit 16.  $20 admission.  More info:  www.onyxtheatre.com

Pimps Face Steep Fines in Las Vegas

Despite vetoing approximately 50% of the bills placed before him to sign, Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons is set to sign today Nevada Assembly Bill 380, which makes Nevada’s prostitution laws the strictest in the United States.

Las Vegas ranks second in the nation following Atlanta for having the most child prostitutes.

If a person is convicted of trafficking or pimping a minor between the ages of 14 and 18, they will be fined $100.000.  And if the person is under 14, the fine is $500,000.  The bill, which goes into effect on October 1, also allows for the freezing and forfeiture of assets.

Las Vegas Dummies Provide Recession Relief

So, what else is new for “anything goes” La Vegas?   For Alison Wainwright, founder and president of Las Vegas Mannequins, being creepy is just the solution she needed to not just defy and insulate her from the ravages of the recession, but experience rapid growth as well.

Although mannequins make the flesh crawl for many people, she has the distinction of having Las Vegas’ only full-service source for the purchase, rental and repair of mannequins, torsos, lower bodies, heads, glossies, poseables, plastic, fiberglass, faceless ciphers, and full-featured dummies.    Made in men, women, teens and children models, she even takes it one step further, offering “sexy mannequins,” which are “bigger.”

Some of her sales – full-size mannequins sell for between $150 and $330, with rentals for a only a little less – go to adult entertainment businesses and burlesque dancers who arrange their costumes on them.

Las Vegas police officers buy mannequins for use in car crash demonstrations, faux planted officers in cars to slow down drivers on freeways, and provide lifelike shooting targets.

Others use the creepy bits and pieces for Halloween displays and haunted houses.  Students like them for art projects and movies.  But far and away, the bulk of Wainwright’s business comes from conventions, especially clothing expos.

The convention business is where Wainwright started out in 2004.  Since then she has rented a storage unit, and then moved into a warehouse just west of the Wynn Las Vegas.

Sales have been up 100 percent, just as they have been every year since she opened.  And in the last two years her mannequins have made it possible to buy her a new house.

‘Science of Snot’ on Gross Display at Las Vegas Kids’ Museum

Many kids – and many adults, for that matter – love talking about their body “unmentionables,” sometime even celebrating the gross nature and experience of all.  Barf, burps and flatulence speak are all fair game to the truly uninhibited- IF you dare.

Now, “Grossology,” essentially the study of body ickiness, is on raw display at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum in Las Vegas with enough exhibits on bodily secretions, noises and odors to make any grade-schooler or adult giggle uncontrollably.

The exhibit is based on the popular children’s books with the same name, which are normally not used in classrooms but are available in public school libraries, says Mary Pike, the director of science and foreign language education for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas.

Pike said teachers appreciated how the gross can be so engrossing to so many.

But, before you parents get the wrong idea (or a case of the giggles), not all bodily functions are explained.  Thankfully, human reproduction – SEX – is not part of “Grossology” exhibit or in books.

By not covering sex, “Grossology” author Sylvia Branzei-Velasquez says she could be more irreverent and whimsical in her approach.

“There is nothing very controversial about barf or poo or scabs,” she says.

For those children and adults that still can’t get their fill of gross stuff, they can also see the real human body in full gorey detail at “Bodies…The Exhibition” at the Luxor, 3900 Las Vegas Blvd., www.luxor.com.   It provides a morgue-like display of preserved organs and skeltons.

“Grossology” is open now and continues through September 7 at the Lied Discovery Children’s Museum, 833 Las Vegas Blvd.  For tickets and times, surf on over to www.ldcm.org

Naked Mona Lisa Secretely Hiding in Las Vegas?

An original Leonardo da Vinci painting of a topless Mona Lisa may be just locked away in Las Vegas, being tracked down by art collectors. MonaLisa

Another Sin City urban legend?  Maybe not.  The wild scenario surfaced yesterday on MSNBC’s Web site about a similar da Vinci artwork now on exhibit in the Tuscan town of Vinci, the birthplace of da Vinci in 1452.

“The newly revealed painting, hidden for almost a century within the wood wall of a private library, shows a portrait of a half-naked women with clear links to the famous (clothed) Mona Lisa,” according to Discovery News.

The bombshell came at the end of the article when Alessandro Vezzosi, director of Museo Ideale, the museum that housed the painting, wrote, “Our quest for naked Mona Lisas continues.  We are now on the tracks of another interesting version of Las Vegas.”

New Internet Child Pornography Law in Nevada

On Monday, Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons signed into a law a bill that makes it a felony to intentionally view child pornography with “specific intent” over the Internet.   Before the new law, Nevada could prosecute those who downloaded images into their computer, but not those who just viewed them.

Under Nevada Assembly Bill 88, a person who intentionally views photographs or films depicting someone younger than 16 in “sexual conduct” is guilty of a felony, punishable by one to six years in prison.

In addition to these penalties, the new law also allows children used in pornography to file civil lawsuits to recover damages from those who depicted them in films or photos.

They can recover as much as $150,000 in damages, plus lawyer fees and cost.  The person who filmed or photographed them in pornography does not have to be convicted of a crime before being sued.

Stars of “The Hangover” Hijacked in Las Vegas Orgy-fication

Actress Heather Graham plays a single mom stripper in the new Las Vegas-filmed comedy movie “The Hangover,” which opens today.   During a break in filming, Graham went to see the Cirque du Soleil hot and naked “Zumanity” show in Las Vegas with co-star Bradley Cooper and director Todd (“Old School”) Phillips. Heather Graham

Every night, for the finale, cast members toss unsuspecting audience members onstage for a sexless orgy.  The night they visited, the Zumanity cast slipped Copper into the orgy, took off his shirt and rubbed him all over, according to Graham.

Bradley CooperCooper was not only unsuspecting, but before the show, Cirque workers assured him, Graham and Phillips they would not be orgy-fied.

“They were like, ‘We’re not gonna take you guys up onstage,’” Graham says.  “We were like, ‘Oh good’ – and then they grab Bradley, take his shirt off, and he’s like, ‘Ohhh!’ Really freaking out.”

But it was all apparently in fun as they just laughed the incident off.

Bikini-Clad Sirens Bare Skin in Hot Las Vegas, Start Summer Early, Set World Record

Las Vegas is everything kitchy.

Las Vegas needs tourism money- lots of it. bikini

Yesterday, proving both tenets, a parade of 281  bikini-clad women seductively strutted their wares in the hot Las Vegas sun, setting a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest bikini parade.

Parading on the Las Vegas Strip, from Wynn resort to the Fashion Show mall, the entourage of beauties was led by Playboy plaything personality and former No. 1 Hugh Hefner flame Holly Madison, flanked by two Jublilee! bedecked dancers, decreeing that “summer in paradise” in Las Vegas has started a month earlier.

“Only in Las Vegas could this take place,” said Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, who was joined in proclaiming the beginning of summer by Clark County Commisioner Larry Brown at the Welcome to Las Vegas sign – the 50th anniversary of the sign – on the south end of the Strip.

Participants were paid $100 and got to keep their bikinis, which were provided by various Las Vegas retailers at the mall.  The women also got a pass to one of several Strip pool parties.

The “Summer in Paradise” branded parade, which coincided with the beginning of the Las Vegas pool scene season and National Tourism Week, cost the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority about $100,000.   The parade might become an annual event.

Hopefully, the sizzling event will help to boost sagging Las Vegas tourism.   In March, visitor volume was down 6.5 percent compared to the previous year.  The average daily room rate was down 31.6 percent, and convention attendance was down 30 percent.  Gaming revenue dropped 12.3 percent on the Strip and 9.8 percent in the county overall.

‘Porn Nostalgia’ Cult Industry Sizzles in Sin City

The little-known “porn nostalgia” industry has been quietly operating for years in Las Vegas. Now it’s attracting national attention with two Las Vegas companies battling over which has the rights to distribute classic X-rated movies from the 1970s and 1980s.

Information about the cottage industry emerged last week in a lawsuit filed by Arrow Productions Inc. of Las Vegasdeepthroat against VCX Ltd. of North Las Vegas. Arrow claims VCX is infringing on its “Deep Throat” trademark by selling copies of that production.

David Sutton, president of VCX, responded to the allegations saying he started distributing “Deep Throat” last fall because Arrow had refused his repeated requests that it stop distributing two other classic films VCX says it has the rights to: “Debbie Does Dallas” and “The Devil in Miss Jones.”

If Arrow would give up those two titles, he’ll give up “Deep Throat,” he said.  Now, he said, the best thing for both parties to do is sit down and negotiate. Because if the lawsuit isn’t dismissed, a judge could find “Deep Throat” to be in the public domain — meaning anyone could legally copy and use it for free.

And that, he said, is why he didn’t sue Arrow over Arrow’s marketing of “Debbie Does Dallas” and “The Devil in Miss Jones.” The last thing anyone in the porn industry wants is for a judge to rule that any of these films are in the public domain, he said.

Sutton is claiming rights to the old films under an interesting legal theory. He said the predecessor companies of both VCX and Arrow originated during an era when the mob controlled the pornography industry, and that today VCX has a “mob provenance” claim of ownership over the old films.

That may sound far-fetched. But it’s well established that the Colombo crime family produced “Deep Throat” for $25,000 and made a fortune off the production; and that the mob controlled the industry in the 1970s and into the 1980s. The organized crime section of the 1986 Meese Commission report on pornography even includes several references to VCX founder Norm Arno.

In his Las Vegas Trademark Attorney blog, Ryan Gile highlighted an important point about the case. He said that because pre-1989 copyright law required all works to be published with a copyright notice, one issue is whether “Deep Throat” was published without a copyright notice because, if it failed to do so, then the movie might be in the public domain.

“Of course, despite the morass of causes of actions relating to trademark infringement in Arrow’s complaint, this case is really about copyright infringement, and more particularly, whether the film ‘Deep Throat’ is in the public domain. After all, if the movie is in the public domain and all that VCX is doing is distributing that single work under that single title, then VCX is not using the term ‘Deep Throat’ as a mark to identify the source of goods and services, but merely as the genuine title of the work,” Gile wrote.

Separately, Arrow suffered a setback in another case involving “Deep Throat.” Vivid Entertainment said March 10 that a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge denied Arrow’s request for a temporary restraining order that would have barred Vivid from distributing “Throat,” a movie loosely based on “Deep Throat.”

Sutton, in the meantime, said that despite the overwhelming amount of new porn available for purchase and for free on the Internet, the classic porn industry continues to do well in its niche, with the top five titles probably grossing $5 million per year industrywide.

“We’re reaching a second and even a third-generation viewer. Some (movies) have a cult following,” Sutton added.

Brothel Job for Suspected Killer Cop?

Drew Peterson, 55, a brash, mustachioed former Illinois police sergeant who found tabloid fame after his fourthDrewPeterson wife’s disappearance, said he’s considering a tempting brothel job offer he has received from the HBO reality show “Cathouse,” filmed at the Moonlight Bunny Ranch near Reno.

Brothel owner Dennis Hoff said he invited Peterson recently to spend the weekend at the Bunny Ranch and discussed working there, saying he wants to hire Peterson to head the brothel’s security detail.

Those plans, however, are apparently on the backburner as Peterson was indicted May 7 and held on a $20 million bond for two-counts of first-degree murder in the drowning death of Kathleen Savio, his third wife, who was found dead in a dry bathtub in 2004.

Drew Peterson seems to relish being under the media microscope since Stacy Peterson, his fourth wife, disappeared 1 ½ years ago.  He has appeared in People magazine and on multiple national talk shows– most recently to tout his new engagement to a 24-year-old woman.

Iconic Porn Star Marilyn Chambers is Dead, Las Vegas Memories Live On

Porn star/actress Marilyn Chambers is dead at 56. She was found April 12 in her Southern California home by her 17-year-old daughter, McKenna Marie Taylor.  Chambers is also survived by her brother, Bill Briggs, and her sister, Jann Smith.   marilynchambers1

But, sadly, news of her death barely made a blip on the Las Vegas virtually anything goes  entertainment news radar.

Las Vegas Backstage Access waited and waited for something to appear, then decided an article was in order on the verge of her birthday.  After all, she is credited for bringing pornographic films into the mainstream and, in so doing, substantially added to Las Vegas’ colorful and alluring mystique.

Born Marilyn Ann Briggs on April 22, 1952 in Providence, Rhode Island, Chambers was an attractive, effervescent young woman who had begun her career as a mainstream model and actress, finding fame as the smiling blonde cuddling a laughing, nappy-clad baby on Ivory Snow ads, a popular brand of detergent. When she then appeared in an adult film featuring hard-core inter-racial sex, Procter & Gamble, whose products were claimed to be “100% pure,” quickly pulled the boxes from the shelves.

Though the manufacturer quickly replaced her,  it was later discovered that she also had a small role in the 1970 Barbara Streisand film “The Owl and the Pussycat.”

Chambers traded her wholesome image as an all-American pin-up girl for notoriety as a porn star, credited with bringing hard-core adult films into the mainstream consciousness when she starred in the explicit very low-budget 1972 movie “Behind the Green Door.”

Chambers was the first crossover adult movie star.

Chambers, also known as Marilyn Ann Taylor, and then-husband/manager Chuck Traynor were fairly high-profile Las Vegas residents during the 1980s, when they co-owned a local gun and survival store, The Survival Store, backing operating partner Bob Irwin in the gun store and shooting range at Interstate 15 and Spring Mountain Road in Las Vegas.

It was Chambers that popularized the “machine gun and bikini” image used to promote the store – a similar ploy used even today by gun stores around the country – for several years before she separated from Traynor, who was controversial for his earlier marriage to porn star Linda Lovelace (Linda Susan Boreman) and her allegations of abuse.

Chambers and fellow actresses Linda Lovelace and Georgina Spelvin skyrocketed to fame and stardom at this time when both American social mores and the quality of hard-core sex films were changing.

For the first time, films like “Behind the Green Door” and “Deep Throat” (also released in 1972 and starring Lovelace) had decent acting and legitimate, albeit fairly thin plots. As the audiences for them grew to include couples, they also began to take on higher production values and to be seen in places other than sleazy theaters.

She followed the “Green Door” film with other hard-core films “Resurrection of Eve,” in 1973 and “Inside Marilyn Chambers” in 1975. Then she announced in 1976 that she was giving up adult films to pursue other interests. She starred in the 1977 horror movie “Rabid” and to put together a song-and-dance show that played Las Vegas and elsewhere.  After this, the rest of her career she spent shuffling between sex and horror flicks.

In October 1974, Chambers performed in the dinner-theater comedy “Mind With the Dirty Man” at Las Vegas’ Union Plaza (in reference to the Union Pacific railroad station that originally stood at the site now known as the Plaza Hotel and Casino).  It was at this period she was attempting to spin her notoriety into non-porn endeavors, with plaza owners including the likes of prominent Las Vegas businessmen Sam Boyd, Howard Cannon and Jackie Gaughan.  She returned to the Plaza stage in early 1978 for “Last of the Red Hot Lovers.”

But by 1979, Chambers was back acting in sex films and onstage for a short-lived engagement in the one-woman show “Sex Surrogate” at the Jolly Trolley casino in Las Vegas. The show drew the quick ire of Las Vegas officials because full nudity is banned in casinos with unrestricted gaming.

In 1981, Chambers became a fulltime Clark County Nevada resident and known well-known enough that a routine summons for jury duty caused a courthouse stir and generated newspaper coverage. She was dismissed after explaining to the judge, “I’m an entertainer and I have to be in Cleveland Wednesday for an engagement.”

Chambers, married and divorced three times, remained in Las Vegas through the 1980s after her separation from Traynor, who died in 2002. She also dated Bobby D’Apice, who later made headlines as the Crazy Horse Too shift manager in Las Vegas that was sentenced to prison for breaking the neck of a customer.

In an online chat with AdultDVDtalk.com in 2000, Chambers attempted to explain what caused her to take such a radically different career path after “The Owl and the Pussycat” and her modeling work.

“Back then in my naive brain I was thinking that something like ‘Behind the Green Door’ had never been done before and the way our sexual revolution was traveling I really thought it was going to be a stepping stone which would further my acting career,” she said.

She learned afterward, she said, that wasn’t the case. “There will always be a stigma on people who do adult films,” she said. “It’s unfortunate that that’s the way society has made it.”

She returned to adult films in 1980 in “Insatiable” and through the rest of her career went back and forth between explicit movies and R-rated ones. Hirsch noted that one of the most striking things about Chambers’ career was its longevity in a business where stars quickly fade. She still has a photo gallery on the Web site Adult Video News and the Internet Movie Database credits her as recently completing a film called, “Porndogs: The Adventures of Sadie” with Ron Jeremy.

Although Chambers was quick to point out in 2000 that she had done more R-rated films that X-rated ones, she made no apologies for the latter:  “I have to say that the adult films have been a total pleasure,” she said. “They were like getting paid to live out my greatest fantasies. The rest of the stuff … sometimes got to be a real grind.”

Marilyn Chambers was ranked by Playboy magazine as one of the top 100 sex stars of the 20th century and was named among the top 10 adult film stars of all time.

Her Southern California death currently remains under investigation.

Las Vegas Topless Strip Clubs Rain Cash-For-Customers

As former topless cabaret mogul and government informant Michael Galardi walks the Las Vegas Strip schmoozing and looking for a new gig, a high-stakes strip poker match of a different type is agressively being played out at many Las Vegas topless adult entertainment clubs.

Long a “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” accepted business practice, Las Vegas strip clubs handsomely tipped cabbies that delivered lusty patrons to their doorstep.  Fifty bucks was the norm for over a decade.strip-clubs1

Until now.

As home prices and sales continue to plummet and people try to find jobs or at least hold on to their employment, many Las Vegas topless strip clubs have seen fit to double the cab tip ante to at least $100 per customer.   That new ransom could equates to an average estimated payout of $5 million a year by each participating strip club.  A C-note buy in for participating in the cash-for-customers game is commonly paid by Ricks’ Cabaret Gentlemen’s Club, Treasures, Sapphire Gentlemen’s Club, and many more- at least the ones that aren’t secretly looking for new owners or staving off their bankruptcy.

No end appears in sight for the advancing Taxi Topless War.  Many clubs are trying to recoup rising “acquisition” costs by charging higher cover charges and drink prices.   Rick’s CEO and President Eric Langan mirrors the intentions of many strip club owners, saying he has no intention to be outbid by his Sin City bretheren and is willing to write off the expenses as the cost of marketing.

As Las Vegas cab and limo drivers rake in record amounts of dough, they’re also arguing more with doormen to cut ever higher deals.   And it’s not uncommon to see cab drivers pass up picking up ladies waiting for a ride on the street in favor of waiting gents that can bring them more revenue.

Casino hosts, too, are also rapidly buying in to the very lucrative cash-for-customers game.   They’re not just referring their clients to the strip clubs, but hosting them inside the caverns of lust.

And, of course, you can bet your last dollar that the IRS will eventually come sniffing around and look for its due.

Recession hitting the Las Vegas topless clubs?  Pshaw!

Las Vegas’ Sexiest Cocktail Waitresses

Sooner or later Las Vegas Backstage Access knew it would happen:  a Las Vegas branded sexiest cocktail waitress contest.  Who would have thunk it?  Sponsored by the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper, there were 4,539 respondents that were ultimately paired down to a field of 10.  And the winner is… Luxor’s LAX nightclub server Jordan “J-Lee” Abeyta- all 5 feet, 2 inches of 36-24-32 of her. jordanabeyta

The single Abeyta, 22, of Portuguese and Spanish descent, who someday wants to host a travel show on cable TV, briefly talked about her victory: “I’m really honored to be chosen.  All the girls in the contest were beautiful.  Maybe they’ll [customers] recognize me, come in and want to sit at my table.”

Clicking her six-inch stilettos smartly, Abeyta turns and works her magic- like she does three nights a week across the three football field lengths of hardwood floor at the LAX nightclub from 10 p.m. to 4 or 5 a.m.

Abeyta earned 21 percent of the vote, followed by competitors Andrea Atkinson from Christian Audigier The Nightclub (16 percent) and Joey Williams from Tao (14 percent).

Changing of the Guard for Las Vegas Burlesque Shows

In Las Vegas the only real certainty is uncertainty itself.  Entertainment acts change, shows come and go.  And G-string revues are as much a part of the Las Vegas entertainment fabric as gambling itself.  Some say they harken way back to the days of the Dunes Hotel & Casino where it was fashionable to head out and watch the glamorous shows.  Fast forward to today, even the hugely popular sex goddess and entrepreneur Tera Patrick is contemplating a switch from a steady diet of porn to burlesque in Las Vegas.

Following the footsteps of “Lido” that closed in 1991 after 32 years, this Saturday, March 28 after 49 years the iconic “Folies Bergere” burlesque revue at the Tropicana in Las Vegas will sadly go dark forever after performing 29,000 shows- along with the feathered showgirls the the style, spirit, and very essence of classic Las Vegas entertainment.

But, even if you’re not one of the lucky 100 people that got a ticket for the final Folies show or one of the 750 invited guests and alumni, there’s still hope.

You can still watch  sexy cabaret revues like “Fantasy,” “Crazy Girls,” “X Burlesque,’ or the full-blown old-Vegas style revue “Jubilee!,” that’s been going since 1981.   Then there is  the female attraction of  “Men of X at Hooters.”

But if you are game for a brand new Las Vegas burlesque treat you might want to catch the first previews of “Peepshow” that start on March 30 and run through April 17 at Planet Hollywood.  Billed as a “modern contemporary burlesque” the sexy show features Scary Spice Girl Mel B. (Melanie Brown) and “Dancing With the Stars” champion Kelly Monaco, who also played on “General Hospital” and posed for Playboy- watching them perform alone is worth the price of admission – and a cast of 29 principals, tightly choreographed dancers, and a band of all female musicians.  peepshow

Neither Mel B nor Monaco will be topless, but several of the dancers will be for the cabaret show.  Mel B plays Peep Diva, the mistress of the ceremonies, and Monaco is Bo Peep, who falls asleep in a short movie that starts the show.

Broadway director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell says, “It really isn’t a musical because there isn’t really a written book and scenes that string the show together in that sense.  It’s a story told through song and dance.  It’s really modern day burlesque.  We’ve taken song and dance and the arte of striptease to tell a story.”

BASE is producing the Las Vegas show.  Architect David Rockwell (“Phantom, the Las Vegas Spectacular”) designed the lavish set.  And Greg Barnes, who won a Tony Award for “The Drowsy Chaperone,” is creating the costumes.

The music includes Michael Bubble’s “Feeling Good,” Connie Francis’ “Teddy,” Madonna’s “Hung Up,” and original tunes by Andrew Lippa.

“We took the bones of what I created in New York and tailored it for the Las Vegas market,” says Mitchell. “We couldn’t do this show in New York City.  This is a Las Vegas show, for sexy adult men and women who want to go out together and have an amazing time.  We’re not trying to pound anything over anyone’s head.”

Mitchell says he doesn’t want to reveal too much else about the show.

“I don’t want to be coy, but isn’t that the fun of striptease- what you don’t see as opposed to what you see?” says Mitchell.  “It’s one of the things I think is desperately missing here in Las Vegas and something I’m a huge fan of- the right time to take it off.  It’s about how you take it off.”

Tickets range from $65 to $100 and previews for the tale with a tease start on Monday, March 30 through April 17 at the showroom at Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas (702-785-5000).

Chalk up one for Las Vegas ‘Adult Entertainment’ Peddlers

Like it or not, peddlers lining the Las Vegas sidewalks, clicking their provocative handbills, and otherwise hawking adult entertainment promotions to passerbys is a part of our historic, colorful fabric, and, for some, this perhaps adds to our alluring mystique.  After all, we are Sin City, right?   handbills

One can regularly see such peddlers on the sidewalks of the Las Vegas Strip, in front of the Las Vegas Convention Center, and many other places around town.  Almost everywhere except for congregating in original Las Vegas, more specifically the Fremont Street Experience.

Until now.

A court ruling recently set aside several Las Vegas ordinances that sought to limit such activities at the Fremont Street Experience.  Of course the laws could be once again appealed, but Las Vegas’ colorful Mayor Oscar Goodman, in his last term of office, said recently that it might be time to let the 12-year-old on and off again lawsuit go.

The Las Vegas City Council will hear its options at an upcoming meeting, he said, and can weigh in on the merits of appealing the decision, trying to craft another set of ordinances or take some other approach.

Quickly turning the other cheek, though, Mayor Goodman said Las Vegas would staunchly fight anyone who tried to pass out adult material, such as escort advertisements handed out on the Strip.

“You don’t want to see one of these situations where a man takes his daughter down to Fremont Street to see the light show and has some smut shoved in his daughter’s face,” Goodman said.  “If they use the same aggressive mannerisms that they do out on the Strip, we’re certainly not going to tolerate that.”

Glitter Gulch, a leading adult entertainment Fremont Street business, is just a stone’s throw away from anyone walking down those same streets.

The American Civil Liberties Union was quick to challenge the city ordinances on free speech grounds, arguing that bans on passing out literature and advertising or on setting up tables to promote a cause were unconstitutional.

The case has been winding its slow way through appeals, revised ordinace and more litigations since 1997.

In enacting such ordinances, Las Vegas city leaders contend that businesses that rent space or kiosks from Fremont Street Experience LLC, which operates the pedestrian mall, needs some protection again people setting up competing sales operations next door for free.

Holly Madison Sets Sights on New Las Vegas Gig?

After being the main love squeeze for Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner for seven years, breaking up, and recently breaking up from Las Vegas illusionist and Luxor headliner Criss Angel following a four-month live-in relationship, Las Vegas resident, actress, and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Holly Madison, 29, says she is has no interest in hollymadisongetting back into another relationship anytime soon.

But what she is wanting is to stay in the TV reality show business but move into “the production side of things.”  One of the three co-stars of the hit TV reality show “The Girls Next Door,” Madison now has her sights set on a Las Vegas project to be a reality show producer.  The concept reportedly would be a combination of “Girls Next Door,” and “The Hills,” with a little bit of the “Crazy Horse Paris” style topless revue thrown in just for good measure.

“I want to establish my own brand and my own career and not be mooching off something else,” says Madison, who is now immersed into dance rehearing six hours a day at the Delgado Dance Studio in Summerlin.  Madison had no prior dance background before becoming a last-minute addition to replace the injured Jewel on “Dancing with the Stars” and remains in the competition with her dance partner Dimitry Chaplin.

Spice Girl Mel B Takes It Off in Las Vegas

Former Spice Girl Mel B, who co-stars with Kelly Monaco, in the upcoming “Peepshow” at Planet Hollywood Resort in melbLas Vegas feels less is best.   While the singer was recently fitting her costumes she felt they weren’t suggestive enough and began immediately taking parts of her costumes off and hiking up the hemlines to make them ultra skimpier.

Is it just something in the rare Sin City air or what that makes people do strange things here?

The adult show opens for previews on March 30.

Las Vegas is Best at Being on the Bottom?

Everybody likes being Numero Uno.  And Las Vegas is no exception.  For example, just last month, Nightclub & Bar losermagazine voted Sin City the top place honor for having the best pubs to get sloshed…er, sorry, no it was officially for having the “largest-volume of independent nightclubs, bars, and lounges in the United States,”  reeling in almost 25 percent of the Top 100 spots.

And, with death-defying temperatures the norm, Las Vegas always rank high on lists for the number of sunny days in a year.

Being declared top dawgee is all well and good, but where is the real diversity in that?  How can you really differentiate yourself from the pack when all you can boast is just a squeaky clean image?  Just ask Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, or Lindsay Lohan.  (Did Lohan ever find her missing car at Planet Hollywood?  That’s the stuff that needs to make the major news headlines, not the incessant and boring economy stuff, right?)

No, apparently where Las Vegas shines brightest in our choking desert sun is being reigning cellar dwellers and bestowed multiple honors for being the worst.

Last month Forbes magazine stepped out on a sturdy limb and declared Las Vegas as “America’s Emptiest City.”  (Vegas did so good, they even body-slammed Detroit!)   Not content with just bestowing a singular honor, the kind folks at Forbes then ranked our North Las Vegas and Henderson burbs among America’s 10 most boring cities.

And before decrying unfair discrimination by a single publisher, Men’s Fitness magazine also jumped into the act and ranked Las Vegas as the fattest city in America.   Then Business Week entered the melee and declared that Las Vegas ranked No. 7 among the unhappiest cities in the nation.  But, even then, there was a crimson lining:   Las Vegas was ranked No. 1 in suicide, No. 6 in divorce, and, for the hat trick, No. 9 in crime.

In a recent Las Vegas Sun analysis, Las Vegas was ranked as the No. 1 consumers per capita for hydrocodone (a.k.a. Vicodin and Lortab), and even earned a respectable fourth place for methadone, oxycodone and morphine consumption per capita.

In term of Las Vegas urban sustainability – a city’s ability to maintain a healthy living environment – the City of Entertainment is rapidly closing in on last place, falling from No. 27 to No. 47 among the nation’s 50 largest cities.

Las Vegas is rock-bottom – 54th, behind even Guam – in collecting child support payments.

So, can all this be attributed to merely bad statistics? Or is it a case of media sensationalism and just the desire for improving ratings?  And if these awards are well earned, would it really be that bad?  Think about it.  Perhaps Las Vegas needs a break from all of the historic nation-leading city growth year after year.  You know, a time to catch-up…chase away money-hungry California investors looking for a housing deal, and, in the process, give Las Vegas time to bolster its multiple sagging infrastructures.   Maybe the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority and R& R partners could invent some new catchy slogans for the rebirth celebrations?

Regardless, having our nation’s ‘bad boy’ extreme persona is still providing Las Vegas an alluring fatal attraction:  A national study released in January said Las Vegas ranks among the top 20 major U.S. cities in which Americans would like to live.

Las Vegas is ranked No. 20, but who’s complaining?

Brande Roderick Next ‘Celebrity Apprentice’?

branderoderickDonald Trump through contract provisions isn’t letting the Playboy model, film star, and entrepreneur tell for certain if she’ll be one of the two finalists left standing in “The Celebrity Apprentice” when The Donald makes a decision in the live May TV finale.

Although Brande Roderick, tonight’s celebrity “host’ at Tao nightclub inside the Venetian in Las Vegas, says she has no idea if she’ll be selected, she added that Trump “never yelled at me.”  Could this be her subtle prediction?

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Models Prove Life Exists After Football

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit ModelsThe NFL football season is history.  But that doesn’t mean excitement needs to be put on hold. Oh my gosh, no.  The folks over at Sports Illustrated were creatively up to the challenge, responding by providing the ultimate in eye-popping candy when 19 swimsuit models arrived in stunning fashion at LAX nightclub in the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday, February 12, to launch their new promotion for the much awaited 2009 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition.

The event marks the first time the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model team decided to make Las Vegas their destination promotion site.  Earlier in the week they were in New York.  The models arrived in grand style aboard “SI One,” a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, which was completely wrapped in Sports Illustrated swimsuit imagery- something unique to no doubt soothe weary pilots’ eyes as they fly the airways.  This is also the first time that Southwest Airlines has wrapped a plane in virtually nose-to-tail imagery. sportsillusplane

Although the Sports Illustrated 46th swimsuit edition is now available on newsstands, Las Vegas Backstage Access thought you might want to see a quick teaser flash slideshow of the 19 models arriving on the red carpet at LAX. (please click on underlined words to view show; view their names by clicking on captions button in lower right).  Our professional photographers have assembled a quick exclusive glimpse of the beauties.  Included is cover girl Bar Refaeli (pictured in this article), the girlfriend of actor Leonardo DiCaprio, and Brooklyn Decker, fiancée to Andy Roddick.  Six-time Grammy award-winning recording artist John Legend performed at LAX for attendees.

The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit franchise reaches more than 66 million satisfied adults annually in over 10 countries including China, Czech Republic, Greece, Mexico, Netherlands, Russia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, and Taiwan.

Approximately one in three Americans over the age of 18 “read” the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model edition.

Prostitution Legislation Thwarted in Nevada

Despite our serious Nevada budget shortfall, including not being able to adequately fund our school systems and the teachers who develop young minds, the 2009 Nevada Legislature apparently won’t be taking up the proposal of legalizing prostitution and creating legal brothels.  prostitute

“It’s the only major industry in the state that doesn’t pay anything,” says George Flint, president of the Nevada Brothel Owners Association.

The Nevada legislative staff had been drafting a bill to allow the mayor of Las Vegas to issue up to three brothel licenses as a pilot program until a brothel licensing board could be established.

In exchange for the opportunity to expand into the Nevada’s urban counties, the industry volunteered to be taxed.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman has always called for a public discussion of legalizing prostitution as a way to redevelop downtown Las Vegas and help provide budget revenues.

Year after year the measure has been brought up.  Each time the legislative initative has failed.

Nevada Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley’s opposition this year was pivotal to the death of the bill, saying the bill would not be heard because “I do not support legalizing prostitution.”  Buckley runs a disciplined caucus and her strong opposition to a bill virtually guarantees its failure.

Although the battle may be lost, the war wages on.  Now, with state budget shortfalls taking center news stage, more groups are joining in to closely scrutinize the impact of such legislative decisions including  ABC’s “Nightline” that is delving into the concept of taxing prostitution in Nevada.

Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss Drops Desert Stud Farm Plans

There are many things that former Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss isn’t.  (Though, we’ll just save those for a rainy day heidifleiss2article.)  However, there are many things she is:  quirky and unpredictable are words that immediately come to mind.   But Fleiss is also a consummate businesswoman. Testimonial to that fact, her Pahrump, Nevada “Dirty Laundry” coin-operated laundromat that started a year and a half ago continues to be very successful.  In fact, she plans to open another, perhaps many of them.

She also can intuitively sense when her karma isn’t right. In 2005 she concocted a unique plan to open a Nye County brothel on 60 acres of land, close to tiny town of Crystal, Nevada to exclusively cater to women.   Planning to feature a stable of peck-endowed hunks, Heidi’s Stud Farm would have been the first bordello of its kind.   She was featured in many newspaper and magazine articles and even did a HBO documentary espousing the virtues of being unvirtuous.

Only one problem about her plans:  Fleiss failed to take the first step of submitting an application for a brothel license.

Now it appears she never will.  “I think I’m going to put all my property up for sale in Crystal,” Fleiss said. “I don’t want to work so hard . . . and deal with all the nonsense of the sex business.”

But she’s definitely not into retiring and watching sunrises and sunsets either.  Plans, although not elaborated on, are for the colorful and controversial Fleiss to embark on a new Nevada alternative energy project.

She also plans to build her dream house somewhere- it’s just she’s just not sure where yet.

However, one thing is for certain- her lifelong steadfast commitment to her 25 pet parrots that freely roam inside and outside of her home- a double-wide trailer atop her hillside property in Pahrump.  “My birds come first,” she said. “I’ll live wherever’s best for them.”

‘La Cage’ Impersonator Show at Riviera Abrubtly Ends 23-Year Run on Las Vegas Strip

It’s been a very colorful and extremely popular 20-year run for the female impersonator show “Evening at La Cage” at the Riviera in Las Vegas.  Since 1985 the show has gone on with non-stopped passion, headed up by headliner and frankmarino1“Mistress of Ceremonies” Frank Marino.  A cast of female impersonators nightly duplicated every mannerism and nuance of Cher, Britney Spears, Madonna, Bette Midler, and Michael Jackson.

Last night, February 10, at 9 p.m. the iconic Las Vegas Strip show abruptly ended.

Only memories remain for the fourth longest running show in Las Vegas.

The cast and crew of the show were notified by owner Norbert Aleman that he regrettably was being forced to shut down the long-running production.

There were weeklong negotiations with Riviera executives and the show’s producers, but because of falling ticket sales and no sign of an immediate recovery for hotel bookings, it was decided to close the show.

Frank Marino, who played the show’s colorful Mistress of Ceremonies as Joan Rivers, held the title of Las Vegas’ longest-running headliner. He was presented with a key to the city on “Frank Marino Day” on Feb. 1, 2006.  Additionally, Frank has a star on the Strip’s Walk of Stars and Frank Marino Drive in honor of him.  He also appeared in “Miss Congeniality 2,” which was filmed in Las Vegas and authored the book “His Majesty the Queen.”

Marino said he was expecting the closure because of falling audience numbers. After a monthlong vacation, he says he’ll start work on his “ultimate drag show” he’s been working on for several months.

Also let go last night were actors Lane Lassiter, who played Michael Jackson; Steven Wayne, who played Cher and was at the superstar singer’s premiere last year at the Caesars Palace Coliseum at her invitation; Ryan Zink, who performed as Reba McEntire; Brent Allen as Bette Midler; and Crystal Woods as Diana Ross, along with Frank’s understudy James Henderson.

Norbert, who also produces the sexy topless adult cabaret revue “Crazy Girls” at the Riviera, says that revue will continue. “Crazy Girls” has been on extended hiatus since Christmas, and that lineup of eight topless beauties will reopen this Wednesday.

News of “La Cage” closing follows the announcement that “Folies Bergere,” the topless revue at the Tropicana, will close in March after a 49-year run.

‘Monster Circus’ Transforms Las Vegas into Rock ‘n Roll Extravaganza- and Freak Show

monstercircusWhat’s a “monster circus?”  It’s yet another new spectacular production for Las Vegas that never ceases to have enough aces up their entertainment sleeve.   Monster Circus is truly a freaky circus that combines a high-octane live rock concert – no DJs here – with sexy dancers, human circus acts, aerials, freaks of nature, and, of course, a tour bus full of platinum certified real rock stars that play their award-winning rock and heavy metal ballads of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s- all while interacting with their audience.

It’s a first for Las Vegas.

Rock star debauchery begins with an all-star lineup of the jaw-dropping Monster Circus band featuring artists  Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Dio) John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, Ratt), Fred Coury (Cinderella), Bruce Kulick (KISS), and Tony Montana (Great White). Various guest artists will “join the circus” and perform the hits they personally rock out to, creating an ever evolving talent and set list. In addition to these rock and metal masters, special theme nights will be dedicated to the songs of a single legendary band.

All the non-stop zany action kicks off on March 19 inside the legendary Hilton Theater in Las Vegas where the biggest names in music, from Elvis Presley to Barry Manilow, have performed. The circus is in Sin City six nights a month on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with an 11 p.m. show time. March dates are 19-21 and 26-28.  And for those that still can’t get enough rock ‘n roll, a nightly after-show party will keep you blood pumping as the circus action continues till the wee hours of the morning.

Tickets can be purchased at the Las Vegas Hilton box office, online at www.lvhilton.com, www.vegas.com, www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 702-732-5755 or 800-222-5361.

Sex Wanes in Las Vegas

Sex to Las Vegas is like the motherhood and apple pie for puritanical cities:  it provides the embodiment and very essence of Sin City’s worldwide allure and attraction.  Sex drives Las Vegas.  Or does it? sex

The sad but naked truth is Las Vegas sex convention dominance is being challenged.  Witness the results this year from the annual sex poster child- the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo at the Sands Expo and Convention Center that occurred on January 9 through 11.  Although similar smaller adult conventions take place, the Las Vegas AVN convention has always been the ‘Big Momma’- by and far the reigning ruler of THE largest event for the adult entertainment industry worldwide.

Thousands of sex workers make their annual pilgrimage to the Mecca of Sin.  Last year event organizers reported attendance of approximately 12,000 sex industry workers, 17,000 fans, and 1,300 of the media.  That provides a whole lot of legalized peeking-and-peeping.

But this year, only 250 exhibitors took the gamble to show up and showcase their latest and greatest in adult entertainment products and toys.  That’s down about 18 percent, according to expo spokesman Sean Devlin.

The only saving grace is that fan and media interest appeared strong this year.  Many attendees grabbed the rare opportunity to see in one place the adult industry’s top stars and try to gain their “secrets” by attending fan seminars, events, and taking advantage of a plethora of up-close and personal networking opportunities.

But looking doesn’t keep the lights on.

The toxic U.S. economy has siphoned off billions of dollars in profits from the normally “healthy” sex business.   Though estimates vary, nationally the sex industry is thought to now generate about $13 billion annually.  That’s down from $18 billion three years ago, according to top industry figures.

‘Stripper 101’ Classes Spin-‘N-Slide into Las Vegas

Being naughty in Sin City has just gained another notch for its bedpost.  In a bid to conjure up and offer new and exciting exercise routines to stay fit – and, in the process, find a creative solution to counteract our stagnant economy – many Las Vegas boutique gyms have begun offering pole dancing classes.   pole-dancing

Capitalizing on this trend, Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas has a new twist: Offering its hotel guests and local residents the opportunity to experience soothing, soul-renewing music in a dimly-lit, swank atmosphere, the refreshing camaraderie of a hassle free, glow-in-the-dark pole date, and, as a innocuous by-product- be transformed svelte and fit in their new “Stripper 101” class in the V Theatre in the Miracle Mile Shops.   Glow pole dancing has arrived.

Catering to the budding pro and recreational spin-‘n-slider to-be, this women only class (sorry guys) consists of a full sexy striptease cardio workout in a Las Vegas nightclub atmosphere.   With no prior experience required,  training classes conducted by Pole Experts provide how-to’s for turning lap dancing tricks, er…techniques (ala colorful boas), proper pole handling methods, and, since this is in Las Vegas, after all- cocktails are served for the ultimate cool-down.

Think this is merely for show-and-tell?  Think again- the full body workout burns off 300 to 400 calories per hour (minus the cocktail).

The growing socially acceptable classes are rapidly become the in meeting place for bachelorette and birthday parties too.  The draw is in part because of it’s inferred naughty vibe, but also because this is an exercise class that doesn’t force exercising by using traditional methods.

Class reservations are recommended (click for info), though, and attendees must be 18 years of age or older.  Packages, which can include commemorative T-shirts and even group and individual souvenir photos, range from $40 – $60. And, for the price of a ticket, those who want to celebrate the day but not trip-the-hip-fantastic may elect to crash the classes to just cheer on their friends and family.
